There are many methods that dealers incorporate today to treat iron and hydrogen sulfide. High concentrations of either iron or sulfide can foul the bed of an ion exchange softener. High concentrations of hydrogen sulfide gas are both flammable and poisonous. It promotes corrosion due to its activity as a weak acid further, its presence in air causes silver to tarnish in a matter of seconds. There is never any doubt as to when it is present due to its offensive odor. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2S) is characterized by a rotten-egg odor and metallic taste. In addition, the growth of iron-related bacteria sometimes present with iron can result in abnormal taste and odor and contributes to biofouling in plumbing systems. Iron (Fe +2) can discolor the water, spot laundry and stain plumbing fixtures. Two common problems found in well water are iron and sulfur.
